Kennesaw State may have completed its defensive coaching staff.
The Owls are expected to hire Mercer cornerbacks coach Darius Safford to the same position. Footballscoop.com was the first to report the hire.
Before working at Mercer, Safford spent the 2017 season in the same capacity at West Georgia. He also spent two seasons at Georgia Southern as a graduate assistant.
Safford played defensive back for Lafayette College (Pa.), for three seasons before transferring to Georgia Southern for his final year of eligibility in 2013.
Kennesaw State representatives said they would not confirm any new coaches before the hiring process is completed.
The Owls have had to revamp their defensive staff after former defensive coordinator Brian Newberry was hired to become the new DC at Navy and took linebackers coach P.J. Volker and defensive ends coach Kevin Downing with him.
Defensive backs coach Chris Bland also left to a similar position at Elon, his alma mater.
Liam Klein, Kennesaw State’s recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach, is the lone remaining member of last year’s defensive staff.
It has been reported that former Citadel defensive coordinator Blake Harrell has been hired to take Newberry’s place. Kennesaw State has also reportedly hired former Valdosta State defensive coordinator Danny Verpaele to coach defensive backs and former Villa Rica head coach Rico Zackery as a defensive assistant.
