Nicole Abel

Kell’s Nicole Abel hits a return during her No. 1 singles match Saturday at the GHSA Tennis State Championships at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.

Kell’s Nicole Abel is one of the best young tennis players in the state of Georgia.

And the best thing about that for the Lady Longhorns is she will only be a junior.

The 10th-ranked girls player in Georgia by Babolat, Abel is an accomplished player in both high school and tournament play.

She played Line 1 singles in each of her first two seasons, leading the Lady Longhorns to the Class AAAAA state finals both years.

Abel said she did not expect to play the top line early in her career, but she is suited for the position.

For her efforts, Abel was named Marietta Daily Journal/Cobb County Girls Tennis Player of the Year.

While the majority of her wins this season have come in straight sets, Abel was tested during Kell’s win over Carrollton in the 7AAAAA tournament final. She needed to come back from a set down after losing in a tiebreaker to win the match 6-7, 6-1, 6-1.

As good as Abel has been as Kell’s No. 1 player, she is also a successful tournament player, in addition to being a talented doubles player.

She recently made it to the doubles semifinals of the City of Peachtree Corners Peach State Jr. Tournament in May after reaching the doubles finals in the Icy Hot UTSA Southern Championships Level 2. She also made the singles finals of the UTSA Southern Level 1A Level 4 Championships earlier this year.

Abel said she has yet to dive into the college recruiting process. However, the interest from colleges is expected to begin soon.

The Tennis Recruiting Network currently has Abel ranked as a three-star recruit. She hopes to earn a scholarship offer to continue to play in college.
