LOL at the confusion of the names of two James Herndons…“I hope somebody at MDJ knows I am not the James Herndon that has been trashing Sheriff (Neil) Warren.”

This was a fun reminder of when Otis Jr., father of the current publisher, agreed to make a slight but important distinction of two Mary L. Stephens. All of my life I have used my Southern, double name, Mary Lou.

However, while I was an active supporter/volunteer to re-elect a dear friend, U.S. Congressman George “Buddy” Darden, the other Ms. Stephens continued to bash the congressman in her letters to the editor, thus confusing many of his supporters, often leaving me to defend myself as “that is not me!”

After the publishing of several of my lighthearted letters requesting the Mary L give a more complete name, I, by coincidence met this Woodstock citizen. I suggested she make the simple change but she refused, indicating it was working for her purposes.

After meeting with Mr. Brumby and learning he couldn’t force writers to change how letters were signed, I suggested he place city names under the writers’ names. Thankfully, he honored my request.

After the paper’s adjustment appeared a few times, “Mary L.” apparently moved to Marietta!

Frustrating as it was, it had become a funny story to follow.

To this day I am still teased about having signed my last published letter as “Mrs. Dan Stephens...the Marietta Mary Lou Stephens whom you all know and love.”
