As President of the Georgia Vietnam Veterans Alliance of Cobb County we want to commend all of the Veterans who came out in great numbers Tues June 25th to show support for the Cobb Veterans Memorial, which was commissioned by the Board of Commissioners five years ago and approved but then stalled at every turn by a few who made it obvious they did not want the monument, continuing to use every minute nit-picking excuse in the book to keep the project from coming to a vote. Wonder if they fought as hard to keep SunTrust Park from being built, which cost a heck of a lot more than this project.
We want to thank the commissioners who wisely voted to Honor our fallen War heroes in Cobb County. Also, the 99- year-old Marine survivor of Quada Canal Harry Kone, who spoke so eloquently from his heart asking the board to please stop their stalling and approve the $250,000 funds to get started on the monument, stating that he had donated $3,000 five years ago and wants to see the monument before he dies.
We thank Commissioners Bob Ott, JoAnn Birrell and Mike Boyce for their actions and demonstration of faith and trust in our veterans to get the monument built with dignity, honor, love and caring and with total transparency for those in our county who fought for our freedoms, which speaks louder than words of their support for veterans.
There are over 60,000 veteran voters living in Cobb County and our numbers are growing every year by approximately 13%. I personally felt attacked as a veteran, like I was when I came home from Vietnam in 1974 by two of the commissioners on the board, who voted against moving forward (over technicalities which were agreed upon by all the lawyers in the room, on the spot, representing all parties). Their words did not demonstrate their trust, loyalty or faith in the veterans, and at times demonstrated a total lack of trust and disdain towards us. I felt like being spit upon and beat with protest signs like they did when I returned from three tours in Vietnam. So proud of Commissioner Chair Mike Boyce for bring it to a vote and getting it done finally after five years. Now vets, let’s show them what we do for fellow veterans!
