Re: Letter by Edward Drake Sr. titled “School board member needs to appreciate longtime senior residents,” MDJ, 11/3.
God bless you, Mr. Drake. I agree with you totally about the need to not reinstate school taxes on senior citizen property owners.
I do disagree that taxpayers with children paid for the education of other children. The education of children with teachers, buildings, buses and all the other expenses is a huge expense. Compare the cost of sending a child to school for 12 years or more with the staggering amount of just 4 years of college. If anything, all those citizens without children or sent their children to private schools or home schooled paid far more than they should in school taxes than you and I.
I also disagree that you and I get no benefit from helping to support the cost of education of other children. Hopefully they will become productive citizens that will provide support for us paying for our Social Security and Medicare. And honestly I wouldn’t object to adding on a small tax for senior citizens if it was a volunteer tax for grandparents with children in our schools. The most important thing about taxes is the accountability/acceptability as to how our taxes are spent, no matter who collects them.
