DEAR EDITOR:

I’ve been reading constantly about the fear hundreds of Smyrnans have about the Sterigenics facility that may have cancer emitting agents streaming from their facility into the air.

Smyrnans have a right to be concerned with this plant’s activities and how they affect public health. But I find it a bit absurd that while they are freaking out over the plant’s emissions, these folks have that monthly application of chemical lawn pesticide treatment. These treatments have cancer causing agents that kill bees, birds and run into our water supply.

How many of these same people use drive-thrus religiously which with cars running send out excessive fumes that permeate the ozone layer of the Earth and affect the quality of air? I bet you dollars to donuts some of these same folks run their car for 20-30 minutes while waiting to pick up their kid from school or ball practice to have air or heat.

What about monthly pest control sprayed into the house to keep bugs at bay? Most applications of this and lawn treatments require that the pets and kids stay out of the way or be removed from the premises where spraying is planned ( and after for awhile) That ought to tell them something.

My point is not that Sterigenics should not comply with all laws because they absolutely should be held accountable; but it is that there are countless other ways that people ruin their health and that of others, and the life of this grand planet, yet they dont give it a second thought.

Mother Earth is life. I wish people would stop to think about what they personally are doing to harm her.
