DEAR EDITOR:

Having lived in Cobb for over 65 years and a homeowner for 45 of those years, I believe that all homeowners should pay a fair and equal amount for property taxes as each other. We all get the same police, fire, parks and other county services. Why shouldn’t everyone pay the same property taxes based upon the current value of our homes?

The only exception being that a senior or disabled homeowner, no matter the value of their home titled in their name, should be given a varying tax reduction based upon their stated yearly income if they have lived in that home for over 10 years.

If the home resides on property over 2 acres the current value of the land will not be included in the tax valuation as long as the senior or disabled titled homeowner resides in the home. Before this is considered, let us first confirm how our current tax dollars are being spent. If it is being wasted we certainly don’t want to give them more. It would only be seen as approval for them to waste more.
