DEAR EDITOR:

In the Sunday 8/25 MDJ, there is an article on D3 about the Weekly Homes collection of school supplies for Smyrna Elementary School. Next time someone says that schools get plenty of money, refer them to this article.

A few years ago, a friend who was a school teacher told me to pull into Staples. She needed to get pencils, paper, paper clips, Kleenex and more. I asked why. She said that public schools don’t pay for a lot of necessities.

I know that state government constantly seeks new ways to divert funding from public schools. Reduced taxes, Vouchers and for-profit charter schools help to divert money away from public education. Cobb has a unique way of taking money away from public schools. It has a Senior School Tax exemption unlike any other in the metro area.

Instead of trying to explain, I recommend that you go to school board member Charisse Davis’ website and look at the map of metro Atlanta with school tax info. Does Cobb hate public education? It looks like it.
