DEAR EDITOR:

So many people are saying to let the people decide if Trump should stay the president via the ballot box. The trouble with that is that the people will NOT decide. The outdated electoral college will decide.

In 1824, 1876, 1888, 2000, and 2016, the president was elected by the electoral college not by the people. In those elections the popular vote was gotten by the other candidate. The allocation of electoral college votes gives citizens in less popular states (Wyoming) as much as 4 times the voting power as larger states (California).

Some presidents have endorsed proposed amendments to do away with the Electoral College in favor of the popular vote for president and vice president. Nixon endorsed it but it died when it was filibustered by smaller stated fearing a reduction in their political influence. Carter proposed an amendment to provide for the direct popular vote of president and vice president.

Since 2019 resolutions have been made proposing amendments to replace the EC with popular election of the president and vice president. Again they have not gone anywhere. I would hope that eventually it would really be a country where every person is equal to every other person in their vote. The states have the popular vote. Why can’t the country do the same?
