DEAR EDITOR:

This is in reference to Glenn Burch’s letter to the editor in (Sept. 22nd’s) paper. (“This legislation is un-American”)

While I’m in agreement with his letter I did want to correct one statement: “Most were drafted at the point of a gun to fight by their governments, and they did their duty to the best they could.” In fact, while both sides did use conscription it accounted for a very small percentage of troops. In the Union forces there were 2% conscripts and 6% were replacements. Replacements were paid by conscripts to take their place. The Confederate percentages were even smaller.
