Nelson Price’s foolish column (“Did God send…,” Marietta Daily Journal, Saturday, 2 May 2020) engages in a debate reportedly started by Epicurus (341-270 BCE) as to whether the problem of evil makes it wise to believe in any god. Theologians have offered dozens of arguments in defense of faith over this, called “theodicies,” none of them successful as I see it.

The most illogical and unpersuasive of these defenses is the one Price offers: Blame anything you don’t like on something other than your god, credit anything you do to the god, and claim that anything you don’t understand must be good even if it looks evil.

The MDJ can do better.
