Is Cobb County Commission Chairman Mike Boyce at it again with his smoke and mirrors? Two or three years ago, Chairman Boyce led the commission on the now ill-fated implementation of a fee for the county’s senior citizens that used the senior centers. (By the way, Chairman Boyce’s service club was made exempt from any fees.) Some surrounding counties’ seniors that had been using the centers could continue to do so at a fee greater than our Cobb seniors. Needless to say, most of these seniors living outside of Cobb County opted out. This past fall, after much public outcry from seniors utilizing the senior centers, the commission, in their wisdom, rescinded the required fees for Cobb seniors using the facilities. These fees were prorated and any unused portion was refunded to participants.
I notice with interest that Chairman Boyce, on the front page of the MDJ, is asking for a reprieve from the millage rollback rule, “sort of,” which has been in effect since 1999, (“Boyce asks for reprieve from millage rollback rule,” MDJ, 1/19).
Smoke and mirrors, deja vu all over again?
