DEAR EDITOR:

One shocking omission from all of the discussion about drug and gang-related crime is the root cause of it: prohibition! Aside from the other source of the problem — massive user demand here in the U.S. — drug prohibition today is as much to blame now as it was during the years of alcohol prohibition years ago when the likes of Al Capone thrived because of it. Same thing.

If we want to defeat the cartels, recognize drug use as a medical issue and legalize (but control) it’s use. Cartel money dries up. And we address the epidemic of drug use at the same time. Don’t make this a moral issue, make it a strategic one about how to win.
