DEAR EDITOR:

It seems like politicians (both Republicans and Democrats) are not very concerned with our national debt and annual deficit spending other than a few well-placed soundbites blaming anything or any one but themselves.

The most accused cause for our deficit spending seems to be Social Security. They must think seniors are an easy target since we don’t take to the streets to protest and riot. According to the SSA in 2017 (the most recent year I could find figures on), they took in $826 billion dollars and spent $807 billion. Now I know that the trend is that these figures will reverse in the near future, but obviously the current deficits and national debt was not caused by SSA spending.

If politicians were more interested in the welfare of our country instead of their next election, they would honestly address the true causes of our deficit spending instead of blaming the senior citizens.
