DEAR EDITOR:

It was both sad and uplifting to read about and see the picture of Smyrna Police Officer Melvin at prayer with the homeowner whose house was burning (MDJ 9/29/2020).

Certainly sad about the fire, but thankful there was no injury. It was an uplifting article and picture because it showed the police officer demonstrating the compassion that he has for the community.

Far too often this feeling is not portrayed, but you’ll find that it is a natural trait for police, veterans and especially a Marine.

Semper Fi,

Doug Tasse, Commandant

L/Cpl Squire “Skip” Wells, Detachment 647
