DEAR EDITOR:

I was very surprised and disappointed to read about Rep. Teri Anulewicz’s public opposition to recent pro-life legislation and her vocal support of abortion and pro-abortion organizations. Rep. Anulewicz is a Catholic who attends my parish, Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Catholics, especially Catholic politicians, are not allowed to support abortion. Our Catechism clearly states that Catholic elected officials who support abortion risk ex-communication. The Catholic faith teaches that human life begins at conception. Every life is sacred.

Pope Francis recently said, “It is not right to kill a human being, regardless of how small it is, to solve a problem. It is like hiring a hit man to solve a problem.” Mother Teresa frequently spoke out against the dangers of abortion. She stated, “Any country that accepts abortion is the poorest of the poor.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “Human life is sacred because from its beginning, it involves the creative action of God and it remains forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: No one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.”

Whether a Catholic is a Republican or a Democrat, they cannot support abortion. During the civil rights movement, Louisiana bishops had to ex-communicate Catholic politicians who were fighting against integration. Catholics cannot be racists. They also cannot be pro-abortion. Loyalty to Christ and his Church must supersede any loyalty to a political party.

I commend Rep. Ed Setzler for his courageous sponsorship of pro-life legislation. I encourage Rep. Anulewicz to make appointments with members of our parish’s Respect Life Committee or the Archdiocesan Respect Life Director to learn about why the Catholic Church teaches that all life must be respected from conception until natural death.
