A one-vehicle crash around 9 a.m. Friday claimed the life of a 76-year-old man who was behind the wheel.

The driver was identified as Larry Carter, who resides at a South Cobb Drive address in Smyrna, according to Officer Chuck McPhilamy, spokesperson for Marietta Police.

Initial indications are that Carter’s 2002 Honda Accord was heading southwest on North Woodland Drive before leaving the road and colliding with a tree, according to Officer Jared Rakestraw, spokesperson for Marietta police.

Carter was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital by Metro EMS where he was pronounced dead. Investigators say the crash was preceded by a medical event, specifics of which are still to be determined, McPhilamy said.

The Marietta Police Department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Unit is investigating the crash, and anyone with information regarding it is urged to contact Officer Samimi at 770-794-5384.
