Cobb Police have a suspect in custody after dozens of police cars closed down Riverside Parkway near Six Flags on Saturday night in response to an armed man holed up in a Texaco gas station near Six Flags.
No injuries were reported in the incident that started around 5:30 p.m., but the department called in the SWAT team to respond.
Speaking from the scene shortly after officers arrested the man, Sgt. Wayne Delk said the suspect’s identity is not yet known, nor has a motive been ascertained for his presence in the store.
“The gentleman, apparently, earlier today, walked into the store, was waving a gun around,” Delk said. “There were some shoppers in the store, they immediately ran out of the store. Of course, the employees were behind a glassed area, so they ducked down, they made their way out the back, and he was just in the store by himself. He didn’t make any demands, and when officers arrived, they attempted to make contact with him, and he wasn’t responding.”
Through the rain and roar of cars driving down Tom Murphy Freeway, officers could be heard shouting commands to the suspect over a loudspeaker, including to put his hands on the ground.
Eventually, Delk said, the man laid down his weapon and complied with the officers’ commands. Police began leaving the scene shortly before 7 p.m.
