A 57-year-old Marietta man is dead after being struck by a car while attempting to cross Cobb Parkway by South Marietta Parkway at about 8 p.m. Monday, police report.

Police say the man was struck by a 1998 Toyota Camry driven by Kevin Alston, 43, of Marietta, in front of the Regency Inn and Suites.

Alston is accused of failing to render aid and fleeing the scene on foot before police arrived, according to Officer Chuck McPhilamy, spokesman for the Marietta Police Department.

The name of the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead on the scene, is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.

A K-9 tracked Alston onto the Marietta campus of Kennesaw State University where he was located with the assistance of KSU campus police.

The crash remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact STEP officer Johnson at (770) 794-5384.

The ability to cross parkway safely is almost non existent. Bus stops are I located at points dangerous to cross. These deaths are preventable if there were crosswalks.
