Valerie Makant holds a collage depicting her family’s story of military service, titled “Family Stars Through Military Service.”

The Daughters of the American Revolution, Fielding Lewis Chapter, has announced chapter member Valerie Makant was named a winner in the National Society of the DAR American Heritage Contest in the Arts and Crafts and Sculpture Category.

The theme this year was “Honoring Our Patriots While Preserving our Family Stories”.

Makant was awarded second place for a collage depicting her family’s story of military service, titled “Family Stars Through Military Service.” The collage shows generations of military service extending from the Revolutionary War through recent conflicts in Iraq.

As a winner in the national contest, Makant will be honored in June at the Daughters of the American Revolution Continental Congress in Washington D.C.
