The Atlanta Wind Symphony will present a free concert May 11 at 3 p.m. at Kennesaw State University's Bailey Performance Center, 488 Prillaman Way in Kennesaw.
The "We Got Talent, Yes We Do" concert will feature Benjamin Smith, the winner of the first annual Atlanta Wind Symphony High School Concerto Competition, performing Ota Gordeli's Concerto for Flute in D, Opus 8. The band will also perform Ron Nelson's Fanfare for a Celebration; Eric Whitacre's Lux Aurumque; Dmitri Shostakovich's Folk Dances; Jonathan Newman's Blow It Up, Start Again; John Zdechlik's Chorale and Shaker Dance and John Philip Sousa's The Gallant Seventh.
Smith is a junior at Loganville High School and began playing the flute at age 10. He currently studies with Kelly Via and serves as principal flute in the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony and Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra.
He won Honorable Mention in the 2019 KSU Young Artist Competition and was accepted into the Georgia Governor's Honors Program. In 2018, he won first prize in the Atlanta Flute Club Junior Artist Competition and was a member of the All-National Honor Ensemble Symphony Orchestra.
The concert is free, but donations will be accepted.
