Mount Paran Christian School (MPCS), the largest private Christian school in Cobb County, announced that it will host the 2019 Northern Georgia FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) League Tournament.
The 36 team event will take place in the Hughes Gymnasium at Mount Paran on Jan. 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
MPCS fields two high school Eagle Robotics teams who will also compete using robots they have engineered and constructed specifically for the challenge. MPCS has robotics teams starting in Kindergarten as part of their certification as a Project Lead The Way school. The FIRST robotics tournament event is free and open to the public.
In this year’s game, ROVER RUCKUS, teams work in an alliance to go on an extraterrestrial robot adventure. The goal is to score more points than the opposing alliance during 150 seconds of game play that includes autonomous and driver-controlled periods. Teams score points by landing on the planetary game surface, navigating to specific parts of the 12x12-foot playing field, detecting and manipulating gold pieces autonomously, retrieving gold and silver minerals from the field surface and planetary craters, scoring minerals into “cargo holds” in a lunar lander or game field depot, and departing the planetary surface by hanging from the lunar lander under their own power before time expires.
The League Tournament for the Etowah, North Georgia Alliance, and North Georgia Innovation leagues will take place at Mount Paran Christian School. Participating teams hail from as far north as Hiawassee and as far south as Kennesaw, from as far west as Rome to as far east as Gainesville.
League sponsor and contributors include The Alliance Academy for Innovation, Alliance Academy Avenger Robotics, Cartersville High School, Darlington School, Duct-Ties and Zip-Tape, Eagle Robotics and Mount Paran Christian School. FIRST Tech Challenge Global Sponsors include Official Program Sponsor Rockwell Collins, Official 3D Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality Sponsor PTC and Season Presenting Sponsor Qualcomm.
