America may run on Dunkin’, but on Cobb Parkway, people prefer Tip Top.

Tip Top Donuts opened across from the Walker School in June 2015. Store supervisor Kimra Seang said it came as a surprise when management went to file paperwork with the city and learned that Dunkin’ Donuts was building a restaurant right next door.

“We were a little scared, but we already purchased the property and everything,” he said. “You can’t back out.”

Tip Top is a family-run business. It was founded by owner Aun Taing, Seang’s uncle. Other family members, including Aun Taing’s son, manager Khiev Taing, help run the shop.

At first, they worried they would not be able to compete with the breakfast behemoth.

But now, Tip Top is at the top of the doughnut pile. The Dunkin’ Donuts location closed its doors late last month.

Seang said they heard the news from a Dunkin’ Donuts delivery driver who stopped by to get some Tip Top doughnuts.

“We’re not afraid of Dunkin’ Donuts, but we don’t have anything bad to say about them,” Seang said. “But I guess we win the fight.”

Seang said customers tell him they prefer Tip Top because they want to support local business and because their doughnuts are made fresh every day.

“It’s not really that big of a competition,” he said.

Seang said the big guys did have some advantages over the mom and pop store: Dunkin’ Donuts had a drive-thru, while Tip Top does not. Dunkin’ Donuts locations also serve a wide variety of specialty coffee drinks that Tip Top cannot currently match, but Khiev Taing said that will soon change.

“We’re starting slowly,” he said. “We’re going to have iced coffee, fancy lattes and stuff.”

While Tiang and Seang slung pastries last week, some of their customers chatted about Dunkin’ Donuts’ demise.

“I like Dunkin’, but over there, they just seem a little bit stale,” said customer Robert Eond.

Eond said he also appreciates how Tip Top employees sometimes toss free doughnut holes into his box of doughnuts.

Molly Scarborough said she let her two sons decide where they would go for breakfast after going to the doctor and getting shots. They wanted Tip Top Donuts.

Taing said he has seen would-be Dunkin’ Donuts customers try their now-shuttered drive-thru before giving up and coming to Tip Top.

He said he hopes Dunkin’ Donuts fans will give his family’s treats a try and support local businesses.

“We’re the backbone of America, you know?” he said. “Small businesses.”
