A Douglasville man died after an ongoing dispute between him and another led to a gun battle in which he was struck in Villa Rica Sunday night, police reported.

Marko Xavier Burton, 36, of Douglasville, was killed in the incident at the corner of Cleghorn and McCauley streets, Villa Rica Police reported on its Facebook page. A bystander was struck by one of the shots fired but was treated and released from Tanner Medical Center, police reported.

Villa Rica Police stated officers responded Sunday at 6:22 p.m. to reports of a shooting. They determined that Burton and Julius Walker, 31. of Villa Rica had been involved in a dispute earlier in the afternoon at another location, a report stated.

"Walker was at the Cleghorn Street location when Burton stopped his vehicle and exited with a firearm in his hand. The dispute escalated with both Burton and Walker firing shots at each other," stated a report on the police department's Facebook page.

Burton was struck by the shots fired and transported to Tanner where he was pronounced dead. Walker was not injured in the incident, the report stated.

"Investigators discovered that the firearm used by Burton had been reported stolen in Paulding County. Walker was found to have an active warrant for a probation violation. Walker was arrested on that (probation violation) charge and the investigation into the shooting is ongoing."

The Villa Rica Police Department is asking that any witnesses that have not spoken with the investigators contact Capt. Shaddix or Detective Terry at (678) 840-1322.
