South Central Middle School will be getting a new name “that better represents the community it serves,” the superintendent said recently.
The Bartow County School Board on March 18 voted to approve Superintendent Phillip Page’s recommendation to begin the process of finding a new name for the 30-year-old middle school in Emerson.
Page told board members the process will begin in April and be completed in time for the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
A committee will decide on a school name, colors and mascot, a district spokesperson said. It includes parents, business leaders, teachers and students from across the school district, Page said.
Once the committee recommends a name “it will go before the school board for approval,” Page said.
He said community members approached him in August to begin discussions about renaming the middle school.
“Based on feedback gathered, a committee is being developed to identify a new name for the school that better represents the community it serves,” Page said.
South Central opened in 1989 and has about 600 students. Its sports teams are the Chieftains.
