Supporters of a longtime effort to build a permanent memorial for victims of the 1977 crash of Southern Airways Flight 242 in Paulding County gathered recently for a fund-raising event.

The event at Silver Comet Field at Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport near Dallas reportedly raised about $130,000 for a stainless steel memorial near the crash site on Dallas-Acworth Highway in the New Hope community.

The crash killed 72, including nine on the ground in Paulding County, and is the worst aircraft disaster in Georgia history.
