A historic theater in the Grove Park Neighborhood in west Atlanta recently received assistance and a donation from the Fox Theatre Institute.

The Grove Park Theatre is moving forward with a restoration project that will include a new roof, additional repairs and planning for future use of the venue.

The theater, located at 1576 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway NW, opened in 1941 with a seating capacity of 618. It later closed in 1969.

Now, a nonprofit group dedicated to revitalization in the Grove Park area aims to restore the theater and use it as a center for community arts.

According to their website, Grove Park Foundation is committed to a long-term effort to build a cradle-to-college education pipeline, develop affordable and mixed income housing, and create community health and wellness programs and facilities.

Along with the theater restoration project, the organization has also led the way to secure $18.5 million in funding from Atlanta Public Schools for construction of a new Woodson Park Academy building, slated to open in 2020, and secured a partnership with the YMCA of Metro Atlanta to construct a new state-of-the-art community wellness and early childhood learning center adjacent to Woodson Park Academy.

According to the Fox Theatre Institute, the Grove Theatre project signifies the institute’s ongoing commitment to provide historical theaters and cultural centers across the region with funding, guidance and professional development to enhance the communities’ experiences.
