Union City police are asking the public to be on alert for what is described as "an active scam artist" posing as a city detective.

Officer Jerald January, police department spokesman, said the individual is sending correspondence via text requesting payment for warrants and fines.

"Please be advised the Union City Police Department would never request payment or communicate in such a fashion,"  January said in a statement.

Those receiving correspondence of this type are urged not to make a payment, but to report the activity to police.
