The Union City Police Department said May 10 its investigation into a kidnapping and assault has turned in a new direction.

Officer Jerald January, the department’s spokesman, said a 16-year-old girl had reported being drugged and taken away from Ronald Bridges Park late at night on April 28, then assaulted at a separate location.

“A further look into this incident has revealed that no kidnapping occurred as the victim has recanted her accounts of being abducted from the park,” January said in a statement.

The case is not closed, he said.

“This is still an active and ongoing investigation into what is now believed to be a sexual assault that occurred at a location yet to be determined within our jurisdiction,” January said.

He said the park at 5285 Lakeside Drive is protected by an aggressive police presence in the area and residents should not fear for their safety.
