Ananya Augustine, a fourth grade student at Hickory Flat Charter Elementary, is the new spelling bee champion for Henry County Schools.
According to a news release, her correct spelling of “utility” and “adder” earned her the district’s top honor as the best speller.
Ananya bested 37 competitors from elementary and middle schools, ranging from fourth through eighth grades, on Jan. 12.
Brianna Turner, an eighth grade student from Hampton Middle School, finished in second place, while Maleeka Modi, a seventh grade student from Eagle’s Landing Middle School, finished in third place.
Ananya competed against the best in the district, but her family is no stranger to academic accomplishments.
Her sister Andrea Augustine graduated as the valedictorian from Eagle’s Landing High School last year.
According to Ananya, practice was the key to her success and this practice took many hours over the semester break and each night during the school week.
She said her tried-and-true methods of practice words and reading the dictionary helped her the most.
Plans for the young speller focus on a desire to be an archaeologist.
She said she looks forward to the opportunity to help future generations learn about civilizations that have existed around the world.
The three finalists received mementos of their accomplishments, including cash prizes from the Henry County Association of Educators and the Georgia Association of Educators.
All three will move on to the next competition for Region 5 at Edwards Middle School in Conyers on Feb. 24, vying for the chance to move on to the state bee March 16.
