Oakland Elementary School in McDonough was the surprise recipient of a $10,000 donation from Burlington Stores and AdoptAClassroom.org during a recent Red Ribbon Week pep rally.

“Students and teachers were shocked to find special guests from the two business organizations after being called to the gym for what they believed to be a rally about staying away from drugs,” Henry County Schools spokesman J.D. Hardin said in a statement.

Funds will be evenly distributed among the teachers, giving each about $200 for classroom supplies.

Principal Walter Shields made the announcement and thanked the donors.

“Our teachers are well-deserving and are looking forward to being able to use the funds to enhance learning in the school and their classrooms,” he said.

The funds presented to the school were in conjunction with the grand opening of the new Burlington store located along Highway 20 in McDonough, Hardin said, adhering to a company tradition.
