South Fulton Fire Rescue firefighter Lauren Wood competed at the 2022 Firefighter Combat Challenge where she placed third in women’s tandem.
This was Wood’s first year competing in the annual tournament but the 10-year veteran said she is determined to win in 2023.
The event, which makes stops around the U.S., was held Sept. 8 through 10 at the Dickey-Stephens Park parking lot adjacent to the Arkansas River in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
The Firefighter Combat Challenge, celebrating its 30th year, attracts thousands of U.S., and Canadian municipal fire departments each year and when televised is seen by more than 30 million people worldwide.
According to a news release, “the mission of the Firefighter Combat Challenge is to promote, showcase, and publicly celebrate the selfless spirit and extraordinary fitness levels of America’s elite firefighter heroes and heroines in an exciting and entertaining sports competition that travels the United States – all while simulating the arduous and essential skills of firefighting.”
Challenges include climbing a five-story tower in full PPE gear, forcible entry, victim rescue with a 175 lb. dummy, and fire hose hoisting and dragging.
