At a recent meeting at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Buckhead, the Rotary Club of Buckhead honored Decatur resident and 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel with the Rev. Robert Ross Johnson Humanitarian Award. Wuerffel, who starred at Florida and then played for the New Orleans Saints and three other NFL teams, was lauded for his work as executive director of Desire Street Ministries, a nonprofit that was founded in New Orleans in 1990 and moved to Atlanta in 2008. Desire Street is a faith-based group that provides support for ministry leaders who in turn help children and families living in under-resourced neighborhoods in cities from South Carolina to Texas. Of the award, Wuerffel said, “This is a tremendous honor from an incredible group. Rotary in general is fantastic and Buckhead Rotary has done so much. Then, to be honored for Rev. Johnson and to hear his story and then look at the list of former winners and the first being Andrew Young, it’s amazing.”
