Tucker’s battle against Stephenson for the Region 4AAAAAA title highlights the final week of the prep football regular season for DeKalb programs.
The Tigers stayed undefeated in region play with a 62-12 road win at Drew on Oct. 19. Travon Ford completed seven out of eight passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Josh Vann caught both TD passes and had a game-high 128 receiving yards. Taurean Taylor and Gerry Vaughn each had two rushing touchdowns for Tucker as well. Other Tigers’ runners who found the end zone were Darick Stephenson, David Davis and Donny Harris.
Stephenson also kept pace and an undefeated mark in region contests with its 35-2 road win at Mount Zion (Jonesboro) on Oct. 19.
Cedar Grove stayed undefeated on the season with a 48-6 win against Stone Mountain in Region 5AAA play on Oct. 21. Kortney Cox started the scoring for the Saints with a touchdown reception in the first quarter. Darrell Neal and Rashad Cheyey had rushing touchdowns for Cedar Grove in the first half. Other first-half touchdowns came on interception returns by Montre Montfort and Cox. Devon Barnes’ TD reception in the third quarter completed the scoring for the Saints in the contest. Defensively, Isaiah Ratcliff had four tackles for loss, two sacks and forced a fumble for Cedar Grove.
The Saints host Redan in a region contest on Friday. The Raiders look to rebound from a 20-6 region road loss at Towers on Oct. 20. Cedar Grove leads the lifetime series over Redan 5-2 including a 47-7 victory last season.
Stone Mountain will conclude its regular season on Friday at Westminster on Friday. The Pirates have lost its previous three contests to the Wildcats including last year’s 43-12 defeat.
Marist took control of Region 7AAAA and stayed undefeated on the season with a 25-24 region road win at Blessed Trinity on Oct. 20. With 53 seconds left in regulation, War Eagles’ quarterback Chase Abshier scored on a two-yard touchdown run to make the score 24-23. His completion to Kyle Hamilton on the two-point conversion attempt gave Marist the lead and was the game winner. Abshier had two touchdowns, one rushing and one passing, in the win. Dean Johnson had a touchdown run and John FitzPatrick caught a TD pass. Defensively, Marist intercepted three Blessed Trinity passes.
“I think the biggest factor was the resiliency of our players throughout the entire game,” Marist coach Alan Chadwick said. The War Eagles visit White County on Friday and lead the lifetime series 1-0 after last year’s 35-0 victory.
St. Pius X stayed undefeated in Region 8AAAA play with a 43-29 home win over Jefferson on Oct. 20. The Golden Lions rushed for 393 yards in the victory. St. Pius X visits Madison County in a region tilt on Friday. The Golden Lions lead the lifetime series 1-0 after last year’s 20-0 victory.
Arabia Mountain stayed in the top half of the Region 5AAAAA standings with a 42-0 road win at Chamblee on Oct. 21. The Rams face Lithonia on Friday looking to avenge its 20-18 defeat last season to the Bulldogs. Lithonia leads the lifetime series 2-1.
Chamblee hosts Miller Grove in a region contest on Friday. The Wolverines kept themselves in playoff contention with a 25-20 region win over Columbia on Oct. 20. Miller Grove leads the lifetime series over Chamblee 3-2 including last year’s 33-0 victory.
Southwest DeKalb also kept itself in the top portion of its region standings with a 14-7 win against Lithonia on Oct. 20. The Panthers visit Columbia on Friday and hold a 24-8 lifetime series lead including last year’s 43-14 victory.
Decatur kept itself in playoff contention with a 23-7 home win over Lithia Springs on Oct. 20 in Region 6AAAAA play. The Bulldogs scored 23 straight points starting with a one-yard touchdown run by Brayton Reed in the second quarter. Martize Smith also had a TD run for Decatur. The Bulldogs visit Carver on Friday. Decatur holds an 8-5 lifetime series lead but lost last year’s game 47-0.
Other contests on Friday include Lakeside hosting Brookwood, Druid Hills visiting Salem and Dunwoody hosting Johns Creek.
