The Atlanta Police Department has released more information regarding a deadly shooting that occurred overnight in Buckhead.
In an updated police report emailed to the media June 17, the police stated the victim appears to be the same person witnesses described as trying to break into businesses near where his body was found June 17 at about 8:30 a.m., when officers responded to a 911 call about an individual being shot near the intersection of Peachtree Road and Bennett Street.
“Upon arrival, officers located a male lying beside a white Dodge Challenger,” the report stated. “The male appeared to have been shot and was deceased. Atlanta Police homicide investigators responded to the scene and began their investigation. Initially, investigators learned this vehicle and the male loosely matched the description of a vehicle involved in vehicle break-ins in the Zone 2 area during the overnight hours.
“However, as the investigation progressed, investigators located video evidence and witnesses and learned the incident appears to be the result of the deceased male attempting to break into a nearby business. Preliminary information indicates the deceased male arrived at the location during the overnight hours and began breaking into the business at 22 Bennett St. As he entered that business, an occupant discharged a firearm, striking the suspect. It appears the suspect then returned to his vehicle (parked at 25 Bennett St.) and attempted to flee before exiting and collapsing on the ground. The shooter initially left the location, but later returned and spoke with APD homicide investigators.”
According to the report, no charges against the man who shot the other man are expected to be filed, likely because it was self-defense, but the investigation continues.
The victim has not been identified, likely because the next of kin has not been notified yet.
