The Sandy Springs Lantern Parade will once again light up the city this summer.
The fourth annual event will take place June 15 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Participants will it “Take It to the River” as they parade from Steel Canyon Golf Club to Morgan Falls Overlook Park with colorful lanterns lighting up the night. The festivities continue at the park with music and a lighted floating parade as High Country Outfitters escorts select lanterns into the river, creating a unique display of light and lanterns. The event is free and open to the public, and anyone can participate.
New this year is the arrival of Sanderson, a flying pig lantern, a nod to the city’s efforts to incorporate, harkening back to the pre-cityhood sentiment that Sandy Springs would become a city when pigs fly. Sanderson will lead this year’s parade along with a Swoop of Pigs, comprised of residents who are walking with their own flying pig lanterns. Residents who want assistance in creating a lantern can make their own Sandy, a globe or a parasol during one of the lantern workshops held June 4, 8 and 11 at the site of the official workshop partner, Sips and Strokes at City Walk, located at 230 Hammond Drive. There is a cost of $30 plus fees for the workshop. Here is the schedule:
June 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.: flying pig lantern workshop
June 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: globe lantern workshop
June 8 from 2 to 5 p.m.: illuminated parasol workshop
June 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.: flying pig lantern workshop
At the lantern parade, refreshments will be available for purchase from Steel Canyon and Chick-fil-A within the kickoff area at Steel Canyon. As part of the lantern parade activities, a special parade will be held June 6 at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite in Sandy Springs, providing patients with the opportunity to make their own lanterns and show off their creative skills.
