The spring sports season has reached the state playoffs portion of its schedule with many local programs still in contention for championships.
The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) soccer playoffs saw its first round start on April 24 and the second round taking place on April 2. Roswell saw its boys’ team pick up a 4-1 road win at Lowndes to start the Class AAAAAAA postseason. The Hornets, who are the fourth seed from Region 4AAAAAAA, will visit North Cobb in its next contest. Milton also advanced in the Class AAAAAAA bracket with a 5-0 home win against Grayson. The Eagles host Norcross in the next round.
Chattahoochee was successful in its first round contest with its 1-0 home victory over Osborne in Class AAAAAA action. The Cougars, who are the second seed from Region 7AAAAAA, visit Gainesville in its next match. Cambridge is the third seed from that region and won its first round match at Allatoona 2-1. Nico Restrepo scored the lone goal in regulation for the Bears in the second half. The game was tied and went to penalty kicks with Cambridge emerging the victors. Next up for the Bears is a home match against Dacula. Northview saw its season conclude in a 2-1 road loss at Dalson, finishing its campaign with 10 victories.
Blessed Trinity won its first round home match against Pickens 9-3 in Class AAAA action. The Titans are the second seed from Region 7AAAA and will visit St. Pius X in their next contest.
The Class A private playoffs sees Wesleyan earn a 4-1 home win over King’s Ridge in the first round. Harrison Larner and Sean Renz scored first-half goals to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead. The second half saw Jonathan Lopez and Renz score in the second half to secure the victory. Wesleyan is the top seed from Area 8A and hosts Mount de Sales.
Transitioning to girls’ soccer, Roswell won its first round match at Tift County 5-0 and visits East Coweta in its next match as the fourth seed from Region 4AAAAAAA.. Milton, the third seed from Region 5AAAAAAA also advanced with a 1-0 victory at Archer and will travel to Parkview for its next contest.
The Class AAAAAA playoffs saw Johns Creek win its home contest against Sprayberry 1-0. The Gladiators are the top seed from Region 7AAAAAA and will host Lanier in the next round. Northview saw its season conclude in a 2-0 loss at Harrison and earned six wins in 2019.
Blessed Trinity, the third seed from its region, won at Northwest Whitfield 5-0 to open its postseason and visits LaGrange in its next contest.
Wesleyan, the second seed from Region 8A was victorious in a 5-0 road contest against Mount Pisgah. Lucy Mitchell scored two goals while Kris Laurite, Isabel Moratti and Ashley Cowart each had a score. Izzy Larsen posted a shutout for the Wolves who will next visit First Presbyterian. Mount Pisgah won five contests this season.
The GHSA Tennis State Playoffs quarterfinals took place through April 23 with the semifinals happening on April 30.
Starting with the boys’ bracket, Northview is in the semis after 3-0 home win against Valdosta. The Titans are the second seed from Region 7AAAAAA and will host Dunwoody. Johns Creek is top seed from the region and defeated Effingham County 5-0 in the quarters. The Gladiators visit Coffee in the semis. Centennial concluded its season with a 3-2 road loss at Coffee in the quarters.
The Milton girls’ team is in the Class AAAAAAA semifinals following a 3-0 road win at Camden County. The Eagles are second seed from Region 5AAAAAAA and visits Walton for a spot in the state finals.
Three local teams from Region 7AAAAAA are in the girls’ semifinals. Northview is the third seed from the region and defeated Lakeside-Evans 3-0 in the quarters. The Titans will visit North Atlanta in its next contest. Cambridge is the top seed and swept Tucker at home 3-0 in the quarters. Next up for the Bears is a home contest against fellow region member Centennial. The Knights are the fourth seed and won at Coffee 3-1 in the quarters.
The GHSA Baseball State Playoffs opened with first round action on April 24 and sees the second round take place on May 2. Milton is the top seed from its region and swept Rockdale County with wins by the scores of 11-1 and 13-1 in its series. The Eagles will host Mill Creek in their next series.
In Class AAAAAA, Alpharetta dropped its series to Allatoona 2-0 and Cambridge fell to River Ridge 2-1 in their first round series.
Blessed Trinity is the top seed from Region 7AAAA and won its first round home series over Ridgeland 2-0 (11-1, 16-0) and will host LaGrange in the second round. Denmark is also second-round bound after defeating Northwest Whitfield 2-0 (8-5, 11-2) in its first round series. The Danes are the fourth seed from Region 7AAAA and now visit St. Pius X.
The Class A Private bracket sees St. Francis in the second round after a 2-0 (10-5, 16-1) series win over Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy. The Knights are the 10th seed and will now visit Savannah Country Day.
Fellowship Christian won its first round series over St. Anne-Pacelli 2-0 (6-1, 7-0) to reach the second round. The Paladins are the 11th seed and will visit Mount Vernon Presbyterian. Wesleyan is the third seed, received a first round bye and will host North Cobb Christian in the second round.
