CANTON — At two public hearings on Thursday, Canton C City Manager Billy Peppers announced changes in the fiscal year 2020 budget proposal and Canton’s 5.4 millage rate.

The millage rate, a number by which each $1,000 of property is taxed to provide money for the operation of the city, will be set at 5.4. According to Peppers, this is the lowest rate in 26 years.

The 2020 budget is set at $53.2 million which is an increase of $7.8 million from 2019, with the majority coming from the general fund (accounting for the general operations of the city including public safety, public works, municipal court, planning and development, culture and recreation and general administrative support services) and increased revenue in sales taxes, impact fees and user fees.

Projects budgeted for fiscal year 2020 include but are not limited to:

♦ Etowah River Trail construction and connection between Heritage Park and Boling Park

♦ Design, bidding and construction of Archer Street Downtown parking deck

♦ Increase in police department patrol units

♦ Paving projects in Canton neighborhoods

♦ New 800 mHz emergency communication system for public safety

♦ Increased programming at Canton Theatre

In a message to city residents in the “Budget Brief”, Peppers wrote, “Every dollar that comes through City Hall is important. Our staff recognizes that these funds come from our residents, businesses, consumers and visitors. We pledge to put them to work to leverage dollars from other sources when possible, maximizing their reach.”

There will be a final public hearing on the budget at 6 p.m. July 25 held during the City Council meeting.
