Susan Hester, a retired Bellevue Public Schools teacher, announced her 2020 candidacy for the District 45 legislative seat that will be vacated by Sen. Sue Crawford as she is term-limited out of office next year.

Crawford has endorsed Hester to replace her as the representative for the district that includes Bellevue, Offutt Air Force Base and rural parts of eastern Sarpy County.

“I’ve known Susan for years. Our family and many others in Bellevue have trusted her with our children. We can trust Susan to be a strong advocate for our community and for our state,” Crawford said.

Hester, who is director of the Nebraska Science Olympiad, was raised in Cleveland and received degrees from Ohio State University and the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

After college, Hester began a 33-year career with Bellevue Public Schools. She taught at Fontenelle Junior High and Mission Middle School, then assumed the position of gifted facilitator for the grades 7-12 high-ability learner program.

Hester said finding an alternative way to fund public schools is her top priority.

“Everyone wants a better life for their children and grandchildren; a quality education is vital for that to happen. Nebraska ranks 49th in state aid to public schools. We must find a way to fund our schools to maintain the quality that our families deserve and accomplish property tax relief,” she said in a news release.

Hester is a member of the League of Women Voters, the Nebraska Academy of Sciences, the Bellevue Public Schools Foundation, Bellevue Women’s Club, and Bellevue Together. She and her husband, Kirk, have six adult children and 13 grandchildren.

Hester is a registered Democrat.
