St. Pius X road contest against North Oconee in a Region 8AAAA battle on Friday leads the prep basketball action for local programs this week.

The Golden Lions’ boys team stayed undefeated in region play through its first five games with a 64-51 road win at Oconee County on Jan. 16. Everett Lane leads St. Pius X in scoring with 15 points per game while Matthew Gonzalo averages 10 points and four assists a contest.

“We are trying to get better to prepare ourselves for tournament time,” Golden Lions’ coach Aaron Parr said.

The St. Pius X girls’ team is also atop the region standings and faces North Oconee as well on Friday. The Golden Lions won at Oconee County 34-27 on Jaon. 16.

Marist visits White County for a Region 7AAAA doubleheader on Friday. The War Eagles’ girls team stayed undefeated through its first three region games with a 70-48 home win over White County. Marist also picked up a non-region home win over Landmark Christian 54-35 on Jan. 13. “We’re led by a strong senior class who sets the tone each day for practice and games,” War Eagles’ coach Kim Hixon said. “We’re blessed with an extremely competitive group of young ladies and a lot of depth. We continue to improve every practice and in each game in a large part due to our seniors and their leadership. We have someone different each night as lead scorer and share the ball extremely well. Diarra Oden, Abby Senay and Sarah Skinner continue to lead the charge offensively and defensively.”

Marist boys’ team also faces White County on Friday. The War Eagles defeated Landmark Christian 63-62 on Jan. 13.

Arabia Mountain hosts Lithonia in a Region 5AAAAA doubleheader on Friday. The Rams’ boys team picked up a 64-51 region home win over Clarkston on Jan. 12. Jordan Sterling has led the team averaging 18 points a game and N'Kyzie Hawkins who had a team-high 23 points and 4 assists in a region win over Columbia earlier in the year. Hawkins is averaging 14 points a game. Other top contributors have included Kamaal McCain, Jaelin Solomon-Simpson and Ridge Turner. Lithonia boys’ team also won a region game with its 55-51 home victory over Chamblee on Jan. 12.

Lithonia’s girls team dropped its non-region game at Discovery 49-34 on Jan. 13. Arabia Mountain’s girls squad stayed undefeated in region play with a 78-4 home win over Clarkston on Jan. 12.

Chamblee visits Clarkston for a region doubleheader on Friday. The Bulldogs’ girls team looks to rebound from a 52-49 non-region road loss to Alcovy on Jan. 13.

Southwest DeKalb visits Stephenson in a non-region doubleheader on Saturday. The Panthers’ boys team dropped its region road contest to Miller Grove 63-58 in overtime on Jan. 12. Kadarius Johnson had a team-high 20 points, Eugene Brown scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and James Glisson netted 12 points in the loss. The Jaguars stayed atop of its region standings with a 65-58 overtime home win over Jonesboro on Jan. 13.

The Stephenson girls’ team won its region game against Jonesboro 61-29 the same day. The Panthers’ girls team defeated Miller Grove 66-45 on Jan. 12.

Tucker visits Stephenson for a region doubleheader on Friday. The Tigers’ boys team earned a 55-44 region road win at M.L. King on Jan. 13. Tucker’s girls team also won that day by the score of 65-60.

In Region 5AAA action, Redan visits Westminster for a doubleheader on Friday. The Raiders boys’ team defeated Stone Mountain 72-30 on Jan. 12.  Redan’s girls team fell to the Pirates the same day 53-45. Stone Mountain hosts Towers on Friday.

Staying in the region, Cedar Grove hosts McNair in a doubleheader. The Saints’ boys team earned a 98-36 home win over Stone Mountain on Jan. 13.

Other doubleheaders this weekend include Decatur visiting Banneker, Lakeside hosting Berkmer and Dunwoody visiting Cambridge.

The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) held its Team Dual Wrestling Championships from Jan. 12 through Jan. 14 in Macon.

Marist started the Class AAAA Tournament with a 51-28 win over Cairo in the first round. The War Eagles dropped their next match to eventual state champion Jefferson 64-10. Marist followed it up with a 39-33 win over North Oconee and a 38-37 victory over Heritage before falling to Troup County 69-12.

Miller Grove lost its first match in the Class AAAA Tournament to eventual state champion Buford 77-6 and its second contest to Ware County 74-3. SW DeKalb fell to Clark Central 45-27 but rebounded to defeat Statesboro 45-36. The Panthers’ tournament ended with a 65-15 loss to Veterans. Decatur lost its first match to Cass 66-9 but won its second contest against Starr’s Mill 40-36. The Bulldogs’ run ended against Carrollton 72-12.
