Chamblee girls tennis state title

The Chamblee girls’ tennis team claimed the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA State Championship with a 3-1 win over Starr’s Mill on May 6 at the Clayton County International Park. The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state playoffs have continued for spring sports through the first half of May with several local programs earning championships.

Chamblee claimed the Class AAAAA girls’ tennis state title with a 3-1 win over Starr’s Mill at the Clayton County International Park in Jonesboro on May 6. It's the program’s first state championship in girls’ tennis with the Bulldogs winning all 25 of its matches this season. Chamblee, which was the top seed from Region 5AAAAA, began the postseason defeating Woodland (Bartow) 5-0 in the first round and Bainbridge 3-0 in the second round. The Bulldogs defeated Union Grove 5-0 in the quarterfinals before beating Kell 3-2 in the semifinals.

The Marist boys’ tennis team was also earned a state title on May 6 with a 3-0 victory over North Oconee at the Clayton County International Park for the Class AAAA crown. It's the 19th state title in boys’ tennis for the War Eagles and the fourth consecutive championship, a first-time accomplishment for the program. Marist finished the season with a 20-1 record.

“We had some adversity this year which we had to fight through during the season,” Marist coach Thomas Marshall said. “Three senior starters missed almost two months with different injuries so we played 11 different doubles lineups. We did get healthy the last three weeks and peaked at the right time.”

Marist, which was the top seed from Region 7AAAA, started the playoffs with a 4-0 home win over Cedartown in the first round. The War Eagles followed that up with a 4-0 win at home over Northside (Columbus) in the second round. Marist defeated Jefferson 3-0 in the state semifinals to reach the finals.

Staying in boys’ tennis, St. Pius X won its first-round Class AAAA match at Heritage 3-0 but fell in the second round on the road against Woodward Academy 3-0 on Apr. 25. Druid Hills dropped its first-round Class AAAA match at Mary Persons.

The Class AAAAA boys’ tennis playoffs saw Decatur fall 3-0 at Buford, SW DeKalb lose 3-0 at home to East Paulding and Arabia Mountain fall 5-0 at Cass in first-round action. Chamblee picked up a 4-1 home victory over Villa Rica in the first round before seeing its season end against McIntosh in a 4-1 home defeat.

Tucker won its first-round match 5-0 over Brunswick in Class AAAAAA boys’ tennis postseason action before falling 5-0 against Creekview in the next round. Lakeside’s season ended in the first-round of the Class AAAAAAA playoffs in a 3-0 road defeat at Lambert.

Stone Mountain fell to Greater Atlanta Christian 3-0 in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs.

In girls’ tennis action, St. Pius X reached the Class AAAA finals but fell to North Oconee 3-0 on May 6. The Golden Lions started the playoffs with a 3-0 home win over Northwest Whitfield in the first round and a 3-1 road victory at West Laurens in the second round. St. Pius X, the second seed from Region 8AAAA, visited Blessed Trinity won its quarterfinals’ contest 3-1. St. Pius X advanced to the finals with a 3-2 road win over Woodward Academy in the semifinals.

Staying in the same classification, Marist won its first-round match at home over LaGrange 3-0 but fell 3-2 at Columbus in the next round. Druid Hills was also a second-round participant after winning at home over Spalding in the first round but lost in the next round at Heritage 3-0.

Decatur fell at Buford 3-0, Southwest DeKalb was defeated at Carrollton 5-0 and Arabia Mountain lost at home to Rome 3-1 in first-round action.

Rounding out girls’ tennis playoff action was Tucker falling at home to Creekview 5-0 in the second round, Lakeside dropping its first-round road contest at South Forsyth 3-0 and Stone Mountain defeated at North Hall 5-0.

The GHSA held its soccer state championship finals on May 12 and 13 with results unavailable at press time.

The Druid Hills boys’ soccer team reached the Class AAAA state title game. The Red Devils, the top seed out of Region 4AAAA, hosted Spalding, in its first-round contest and won 5-0. Druid Hills next hosted Northwest Whitfield in the second round and earned a 2-1 victory. The Red Devils defeated Cartersville 4-0 in the quarterfinals and beat Blessed Trinity 2-1 in the semifinals on May 9 to reach the finals where they faced Southeast Whitfield.

The Class AAAA girls’ soccer final pitted two long-time rivals in Marist and St. Pius X against each other.

The War Eagles started its postseason with a 10-0 home win over Central (Carroll) in the first round. Marist, the top seed from Region 7AAAA, faced Northside (Columbus) in the second round and won 9-0. Marist defeated Spalding 4-0 in the quarterfinals and defeated Jefferson in the semifinals on May 9 to reach the finals.

St. Pius X, the top seed from Region 8AAAA, won its first-round match 10-0 at home over Gilmer. The Golden Lions hosted Mary Persons in its second-round match and emerged with a 5-0 victory. St. Pius X hosted Blessed Trinity in the state quarterfinals and won 3-0 before besting Chapel Hill at home 9-1 on May 9 to reach the finals.

In boys soccer, St. Pius X saw its season end with a 3-1 road defeat to Blessed Trinity in the quarterfinals. Marist reached the state semifinals before falling at Southeast Whitfield 3-1 on May 9.

Four DeKalb boys’ soccer programs qualified for the Class AAAAA state playoffs. Decatur was the second seed from Region 6AAAAA and defeated Loganville and Wayne County before falling to Clarkston 2-0 on May 6 in the quarterfinals.

Cross Keys, the second seed from Region 5AAAAA, defeated Villa Rica 3-0 in the first round before dropping its second-round match to McIntosh 5-4.

Arabia Mountain was the fourth seed from Region 5AAAAA and visited top-seeded Carrollton from Region 7AAAAA in the first round and fell 5-0. Chamblee, the third seed from Region 5AAAAA, faced Rome, the second seed from Region 7AAAAA and lost 8-7.

In Class AAAAAA, Tucker won its first-round home match against Brunswick 5-0 before dropping its second-round home contest to Allatoona 5-1.

Stone Mountain dropped its first-round Class AAA playoffs match against East Hall 5-1

The Class AAAAA girls’ soccer state playoffs included Decatur, the top seed from Region 6AAAAA. The Bulldogs beat Johnson (Gainesville) 6-0 in the first round and defeated Union Grove 4-0 in the second round Decatur fell to Whitewater 5-1 in the quarterfinals.

Chamblee, the top seed from Region 5AAAAA, hosted Kell and won 7-1 in the first round. The Bulldogs hosted McIntosh in its second-round match on May 2 and fell 6-0.

Southwest DeKalb earned the fourth seed from Region 5AAAAA and visited Paulding County HS in the first round. The Panthers fell 10-0 and finished the year with three wins. Other matchups included Arabia Mountain losing at Rome 7-0, and Cross Keys fell to Carrollton 4-0.

Tucker and Stephenson saw their girls’ soccer teams in the Class AAAAAA playoffs with first round matches on Apr. 27. The Tigers were the top seed from its region, hosted Brunswick and won 3-2. They hosted Sequoyah in the next round and fell 10-0. The third-seeded Jaguars visited Glynn Academy in the first round and fell 10-0. Lakeside visited South Forsyth in the Class AAAAAAA playoffs and lost 4-0.

Redan saw its season conclude with a 10-0 road defeat at Greater Atlanta Christian in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs. Druid Hills saw its season conclude with a 1-0 home defeat to Howard in the first round.

In baseball, Redan hosted Fannin County for its first-round series and won 2-0. Next up for the Raiders, who were the top seed from Region 5AAA, was a home series against Crisp County in the second round on May 4. Redan won the first contest 12-7 behind three hits and three RBIs from Latrell Wyatt and three hits and two RBIs from Kevin Smith. The Raiders won the second contest over Crisp County 15-3 with Orlando Adams driving in five runs.

Redan saw its season end with a 2-0 series defeat at home against Coahulla Creek on May 10. The Raiders fell 2-1 in the first contest and 9-8 in the second game.

In Class AAAA, Marist won its first-round home series over Cedartown 2-0. The War Eagles visited Cairo for its second-round matchup and also earned a 2-0 series win. Marist won the first contest 5-0 and the second game 2-0. The War Eagles faced Madison County in the quarterfinals with results unavailable at press time.

Druid Hills visited West Laurens and lost its first-round series 2-1.

Arabia Mountain won its first-round home series over Villa Rica 2-1 in the Class AAAAA playoffs but fell 2-1 in its second-round series against McIntosh.

Decatur won its home series over Walnut Grove 2-1 in the first round and advanced to host Union Grove in the second round. The Bulldogs won the first contest 3-1 behind a complete-game performance thrown by Ryan Lewis who struck out five batters. Decatur earned a 10-3 victory in the second contest led by three hits by Jarrett Ford and three RBIs from Ryan Lewis. The Bulldogs saw their season end with a 2-0 series defeat against Starr’s Mill.

Chamblee fell at home to Kell 2-0 in its first-round series while Southwest DeKalb visited Carrollton and dropped its series 2-1.

Tucker hosted Brunswick and won the series 2-0. The Tigers hosted River Ridge in the next round and fell 2-0. Stephenson fell at Richmond Hill 2-0 in its first-round series while Lakeside fell at Lambert 2-0 in its Class AAAAAAA first-round series.

In the first round of the Class A-AAAAA boys’ lacrosse playoffs, St. Pius X dropped its first-round match at Kell 14-3. Marist, the top seed from Area 1, earned a 14-9 win over Whitefield Academy and hosted Greater Atlanta Christian in the second round, dropping the contest 19-14. Dunwoody qualified for the Class AAAAAA-AAAAAAA playoffs and saw its boys’ team lose at West Forsyth 15-0 in the first round.

Girls’ lacrosse action saw Marist defeat Carrollton in the first round before falling to Blessed Trinity 20-7 in the second round.

St. Pius X defeated Lovett 20-16 in the first round but lost to Wesleyan 17-16 in the second round. Dunwoody fell to Milton in the first round.

The GHSA held its Track and Field State Championships from May 11-13 with results unavailable at press time.
