A mix of major league free agents and notable prospects will represent Team USA as the Americans attempt to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

USA Baseball announced a training camp roster of 28 players on Sunday, the first day of camp. The roster will be reduced to 26 on May 30. The list includes a who's who of former All-Stars, such as catcher Matt Wieters, outfielder Matt Kemp, infielder Todd Frazier, and pitchers Edwin Jackson and David Robertson.

Mike Scioscia, who led the Angels franchise to its only World Series victory in 2002, will manage the club.

Any player on the team cannot be on an MLB team's 40-man roster.

Prospects include Triple-A pitchers Matthew Liberatore, Trevor Lane and Drew Parrish, who have been granted time away from their organizations.

The next chance for Team USA to earn an Olympic berth begins May 31 in a qualifying tournament in Florida, with the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Canada, Venezuela, Colombia and Nicaragua also competing.

Teams that finish in second and third place will move to a tournament to compete against Australia, Taiwan and the Netherlands for the final Olympic bid.

The Americans missed their initial opportunity to qualify in November 2019, when they were three outs from beating Mexico in the Premier12 tournament in Tokyo but lost in 10 innings.

The Olympics baseball competition will feature six teams. Already clinching spots are host Japan, Mexico, Israel and South Korea.
