MLB: NLDS-Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals

After undergoing two surgeries on his torn Achilles tendon, Braves starter Mike Soroka will not play in 2021, according to manager Brian Snitker.

Hours after the Atlanta Braves manager said that right-hander Mike Soroka will not pitch this season, Brian Snitker corrected himself Friday, saying that the former All-Star will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Soroka continues to recover from an Achilles injury and has not pitched in the majors since Aug. 3, 2020, when he sustained the injury during an outing against the New York Mets.

Snitker told MLB Network that Soroka "is down for the year, and hopefully we'll get him back next year."

But in his pre-game media call later Friday, Snitker said he "messed up" the prognosis and backtracked.

"Soroka does have a chance of getting back, and I didn't think he did," Snitker said. "That was my fault. I created a firestorm with all that. ... There is a chance that he could get back, so hopefully he can."

Soroka had surgery in 2020 to repair the torn tendon, but the team announced on May 12 that a second operation was necessary.

Soroka has only made three starts since his breakout 2019 campaign when he made the All-Star team and finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year race and sixth in the NL Cy Young voting. He was 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 29 starts that season.

Drafted in the first round (28th overall) by Atlanta in 2015, Soroka is 15-6 with a 2.86 ERA over 37 career starts. He has struck out 171 batters and walked 55 in 214 innings.
