Marietta’s Kareem Hobbs tackles Kennesaw Mountain’s Keyon Brooks during a game at Northcutt Stadium last year, in what proved to be stadium’s final year with grass.

Marietta High School football has been played on grass at Northcutt Stadium since it opened in 1940 at the corner of Polk Street and Cleburne Avenue.

For Blue Devil fans, alumni, former players, coaches and opponents, Monday will offer a chance to bring home a portion of the historic field.

Before a new artificial-turf surface is installed in time for the fall football season, the Marietta Touchdown Club will be selling 2-by-3 foot squares of the Bermuda grass playing surface for $25 apiece.

A professional sod-cutter will be on hand from 9 a.m.-noon Monday. Buyers are asked to enter the stadium at the Polk Street gate, under the scoreboard.

With graduation held in the stadium Saturday, Monday is the only day the sod can be cut and sold. On Tuesday, construction will begin on the new field, which is expected to be completed and ready for the team to host its preseason scrimmage against Tucker on Aug. 16.

Marietta Touchdown Club president Trey Moscovoy said the idea came from football parents who had seen a similar sales when other teams made the move from artificial turf to grass.

"If there is a particular section of the field someone wants, they can get it," Moscovoy said. "The square should get deep enough to get the base of the roots, so, if people have a spot for it in their yard, there's no reason it shouldn't flourish."

Proceeds from the turf sale will go to the booster club. Moscovoy said the money will be earmarked to help pay for college scholarships.

The new playing surface will increase the use of the field, allowing teams from both the Marietta middle and high schools to use it, including the middle school's band and physical education classes.

Cost of the new field is expected to be just over $750,000.
