Despite ending the 2016 season as Georgia’s top kicker, Rodrigo Blankenship still had to beat out transfer David Marvin for the starting job going into 2017.

ATHENS — Rodrigo Blankenship will be the starting placekicker when No. 15 Georgia opens its season against Appalachian State on Saturday.

Blankenship, a Sprayberry High School product, beat out David Marvin, a graduate transfer from Wofford. Coach Kirby Smart said Blankenship won the job with his consistency through preseason practice.

Blankenship made 14 of 18 field goal attempts as a freshman in 2016. His total included the game-winner at Kentucky as time expired, and his two field goals were the difference in Georgia’s 13-7 upset of Auburn.

Smart also announced redshirt freshman outside linebacker Chauncy Manac will transfer to Garden City (Kansas) Community College.
