After it was reported earlier in the day that he would be released by the Houston Texans, quarterback T.J. Yates is instead coming home.

Yates was traded to the Atlanta Falcons late Wednesday evening, in exchange for linebacker Akeem Dent, a former Georgia star.

Yates, a product of Pope High School in east Cobb, filled in as a rookie in 2011 when Matt Schaub was injured. He started the last five games of the regular season that year and led the Texans to a win in their first-ever playoff game against the Bengals.

He played sparingly the last two seasons and had just 113 yards passing in three appearances last year.

As the Falcons traded Dent, they signed another linebacker in free agent Tim Dobbins, Yates’ teammate in Houston. Dobbins, a ninth-year pro, played three games for the Texans as a reserve in 2013.
