The 2013 Cobb County high school football season is just around the corner, and with it comes the chance for local football fans to show up the experts.

Along with the Journal’s package of prep sports coverage, photo galleries and video highlights, the new Cobb Football Friday Superior Plumbing UPICKEM contest will allow fans to test their football knowledge, with the chance to win a new iPad each week.

Fans can see how their picks — of each week’s high school games, along with select college and NFL matchups — stack up against the Journal’s panel of prognosticators in the newspaper’s long-standing “Lucky 7” package, now featuring Fox 5 sports anchor Ken Rodriguez — a Cobb County native and resident — former University of Georgia and Marietta High School All-American quarterback Eric Zeier, sports editor John Bednarowski and other select panelists.

The contest will run for 14 weeks, and each week’s winners will win an iPad. There will also be a grand-prize package for the overall season winner.

UPICKEM is the latest addition to the Journal’s unmatched package of Cobb high school football coverage.

This season, coverage will be expanded to Thursday mornings with an exclusive look at Friday night’s Class AAAAA and private-school games. On Friday mornings, Cobb Football Friday will be dedicated solely to Class AAAAAA games, along with the weekly statistical leaders package.

On Saturdays, coverage will be highlighted by a dedicated high school football section, providing game reports and photos from Friday night’s games. A second sports section will provide more local, state and national sports coverage.

Sunday’s sports section will provide a final wrapup of Friday night’s games, plus capsules on players of the game and full game statistics.

The Cobb Football Friday website — www.cobbfootballfriday.com — will also bring more up close and personal coverage of local games.

On Thursdays, Bednarowski and Rodriguez will analyze the week’s Class AAAAA and private-school games. On Fridays, the two will analyze that night’s Class AAAAAA games.

On game nights, the website will provide instant updates on the scores of Cobb games, as well as updates and comments from the games via Twitter.

On Saturdays, the Cobb Football Friday website will provide video highlights of Friday night’s games.
