Pope wins Region 7AAAAA title

Pope scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away from Sequoyah for a 6-3 victory and claim the Region 7AAAAA championship.

The region title is the third the Greyhounds have won under coach Jeff Rowland.

Jacob Culberson led at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a single, triple and an RBI. Nathaniel Lowe and Johnny Flading each homered. On the mound, Patrick Wiseman earned the win in five and two-thirds innings, allowing just three hits against 13 strikeouts. Stephen Scruck struck out three to end the game.

Pope (18-8, 16-4) will host the fourth place team from Region 6AAAAA next Friday.

 Sprayberry 8, Kell 7: The Yellow Jackets trailed 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, but senior Zach Barnett hit a walk-off, two-run homerun on senior night.

To start the frame, Bobby Gauvreau, Jordan McClure and Michael Chavis loaded the bases and all scored off wild pitches.

Spencer Beyers walked and scored on Barnett’s game-winning hit.

Nick Hartney earned the win, pitching the last inning and two-thirds. Senior Landon Hughes started the game and finished with six strikeouts in five frames.

Sprayberry (10-14, 10-9) and travel to Osborne today.

Boys Tennis

 Walker 4, Talula Falls 0: Derrick Brown and Alan Norsworthy both won in shutouts (6-0, 6-0) in the singles, followed by a (6-0, 6-0) shutout from Will Chocallo and Daniel Sosnovsky in the doubles. Austin Newsome and Sloan Coolbroth won (6-1, 6-0).

Walker will advance to the second round of the state playoffs to face the winner of Brookstone and Eagles Landing Christian.

 Lakeview 3, Mount Paran Christian 1: The Eagles fell in the first round of the state playoffs. Brent Foster and Drew Renno were a bright spot, winning in the second doubles slot with a score of

6-2, 6-3.

Mount Paran Christian finished the season 12-9 and 6-3 in Region 6A.

Girls Tennis

 Allatoona 5, Walker-Barrow 0: Kennedy Craig and Allison Whitley led in the singles with (6-0, 6-0) wins. Haley Proctor won in the singles (6-2, 6-1).

In the doubles, Kat Pugh and Lauren Lees won (6-2, 6-1) while Melanie Whitley and Kristie Cooper (6-0, 6-0) finished with a shutout.

Allatoona will host Sequoyah on Tuesday in the second round of the AAAAA state playoffs.

Boys Lacrosse

n Pope 13, Sprayberry 5: Parker LaVelle scored five goals and Liam Lynch added two goals and two assists to lead the Greyhounds to an Area 2A-AAAAAA victory.

Tyler Borko scored two goals and had an assist, Brayton Wadella had two goals, Zach Lynch scored a goal and an assist, and Zach Wilson scored a goal.

Joe Harmon had seven saves under the net for the Greyhounds.

Pope (7-10, 5-2) will host Westminister May 1.
