Strike Andy McCollum off the list as a possibility of being the first football coach at Kennesaw State.

Sources close to the situation said McCollum, Georgia Tech’s linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, spent six to seven hours on campus Friday meeting with Kennesaw State president Dr. Dan Papp, athletic director Vaughn Williams and other university officials for a final interview.

Unfortunately for the Marietta native, Kennesaw State has decided to go in a different direction. Those same sources said university officials contacted McCollum on Sunday and told him he would not be offered the job.

At the same time McCollum was on campus Friday, Murray State athletic director Allen Ward told WPSD-TV in Paducah, Ky., that Racers’ coach Chris Hatcher, the second of three known finalists for the KSU job, had decided to remain as coach at Murray State.

With McCollum and Hatcher out of the mix, that leaves Georgia Tech quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon as the only known remaining finalist, unless there is a candidate that has yet to be identified.

Bohannon, a Griffin native, has no previous head-coaching experience, but has been part of Paul Johnson’s coaching staff the last 17 years at Georgia Southern, Navy and Georgia Tech.

The 42-year-old Bohannon played college football for the University of Georgia, where he was a wide receiver from 1990 to 1993.

Throughout the coaching search, Williams has said his preference would be to hire coach with Georgia roots.

Valdosta State coach David Dean said he was interested in the job and was contacted by Williams early in process, but Dean said he was not asked to interview for the position.
