Starting from its own 39-yard line and with 7:51 left in the game, Pope started an eight-play drive that culminated with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Stephen Skruck to Ben Doran to retake control of the contest and increase the Greyhounds’ lead to 31-21.
Northview scored a late touchdown with 2:30 left in the contest but Pope was able to run out the clock on their final possession through three consecutive runs by Woods for a first down and the victory.
“Tonight was a good win for us against a Northview team that came ready to play,” Pope coach Matt Kemper said. “We’re trying to build Pope football into a power and making the postseason is another step for us to making it happen.”
Northview (3-7) scored the first points of the game when Terrance Upshaw ran up the middle for 46 yards early in the first quarter to give the Titans the early 7-0 lead.
Upshaw finished the contest with a team-high 97 yards rushing for the Titans along with four touchdowns.
Pope (7-3) scored on their next possession on a 48-yard touchdown down the left side by Woods to tie the score at 7-all with 6:37 left in the first quarter. Northview put offensive pressure on the Greyhounds but its drive was stalled by an interception by Pope’s Murphy Davis at the 50-yard line. The Greyhounds took advantage of the Titans’ turnover and an eventual one-yard touchdown run by Jacob Culberson increased Pope’s lead to 14-7. The Greyhounds took a 17-7 lead into halftime after Marshall Hansen made a 26-yard field goal late in the second quarter.
Pope held its largest lead of the game at 24-7 when Woods scored his second touchdown of the game on a five-yard run with 8:39 left in the third quarter.
“Ronald (Woods) did a great job for us tonight,” said Kemper. “He made some good cuts running the ball and took advantage of some excellent blocking from our offensive line.”
Two consecutive rushing touchdowns by Upshaw in the fourth quarter cut Pope’s lead to 24-21.
